Rules for playing Blackjack

Do you know what are the Blackjack rules? Blackjack or 21 is among the major casino games and it is very popular around the world. It’s a bank game for casinos, where players compete against the house instead of each other.

A player’s aim in a game of Blackjack is to beat the dealer by having a total hand of 21 without going beyond 21 or having a higher hand than the dealer’s hand.

Blackjack house odds are low, ensuring that even less skilled players can go home with something to buy dinner. Also known as Twenty-One, Blackjack is a delightful, exciting, and eventful game that dates back to the 1760s.

The onsite casino version and online casino version have slightly different rules. In the onsite version, any player can be the dealer, but this isn’t the case for the online casino version. Here the house is the dealer, who is responsible for shuffling, dealing cards, handling bets, etc.

The Dealer’s Blackjack rules

  • A Blackjack dealer has to deal with the cards, gathering lost bets, pay winning bets, and generally overseeing the game.
  • The dealer collects all bets placed by the players.
  • He shuffles the cards.
  • The dealer deals one card facing up to each player and one card facing down, called a “hole card” to the house.
  • He deals again one card facing up to each player but this time one card facing up, called the “faceup card” to the house.
  • If a face-up card is an ace or a 10-point card, the dealer offers a side bet called “insurance bet.”

What happens after players bet on the insurance bet?

  • After players have bet on the insurance bet, the dealer takes a peek at the “hole card”, if he makes a Blackjack, he immediately upturn the “hole card”. All players lose except those who voted yes and those with Blackjacks too. If a player has Blackjack and a dealer has blackjack, it becomes a tie. This is the famous ‘push’.
  • If the dealer peeks and it’s not a Blackjack, those who voted yes would fall out of the game. The game continues with the dealer asking the players if they need one or more cards.
  • The dealer reveals his faced down card after all players are satisfied with the cards handed out.
  • The dealer hit or stands depending on the cards in the dealer’s hand.
  • The dealer’s cards are revealed and players compare their total card scores with the dealer’s. Players, whose cards are above 21-score, are said to go bust. Players with higher card score than the dealer’s win the game while those with lower card scores losses the game. Those with equal card score as the dealer’s (push) are given back their bet, although some casino counts push as a loss for players.
  • If dealer’s cards are over 21 everyone who did not “bust” has won.

Players Rule

  1. The value of a hand is the total score of all cards in a player’s hand.
  2. Do not fidget with face-up cards.
  3. Make your next move quickly.
  4. Handle cards with care.
  5. Signal with your hands and say your decision aloud.
  6. If you have, an Ace and a 10-value card (Jack, queen, or king) as your first two cards this means that you have got a Blackjack! You get 1.5 of your bet immediately with or without playing through the round, as far as the dealer doesn’t also have a Blackjack.
  7. When the dealer asks how you want to play your hand uses the appropriate hand signal:

What Stand Means in Blackjack?

When you are satisfied with the first two cards you got, you stand by merely waving your hand or by putting out an open palm on the cards. Taking a stand means that the dealer can move on to other players.

What Hit Mean in Blackjack

If you want more cards to complete a 21 then you hit by tapping the table with your finger or pointing to your cards.

What Double Down Mean when you playing Blackjack

This is when you have card scores that are profitable to you, but you need to take an additional card to balance up to 21. You do this by doubling your initial bet and the dealer will deal you only one extra card but you must stand after this. Hand signal: Just put up a stake, equal to your initial bet, on the left side of your original bet and the dealer will give you one additional card.

What Split mean when you are playing Blackjack?

If you have two cards of the same worth, you can decide to split the cards into two hands. Split is done by placing an equal bet to your initial bet to the new hand. Additional cards are then dealt to both hands. Hand signal: place the second bet on the table and then give a “peace sign”.

What Surrender mean in Blackjack?

If the two cards dealt to you are not favourable, some casinos allow you to surrender the cards for half of your original bet. However, this must be your first and only action. Hand signal: draw a line across the table behind your bet.

Blackjack payout

Some casinos now offer a reduced payout of 6:5 instead of the standard 3:2 return. Doing this increases the house edge to 1.4%. That’s very bad for players and any casino offering this payout one should avoid.

Splits: Some casinos do not allow splitting of non-matching cards; for instance, you cannot split a jack and a king even if they worth the same points. Some Casinos also have boundaries as to which card can be split.

They permit double down after splitting, which reduces the house edge by 0.13%. Some of them allow more than one additional card on each hand for a player who split aces. If the player gets another ace, he can split further. The former cuts the house edge by 0.14% and the latter cuts it by 0.03%.

Surrender: Some casino offer late, early or no surrender option. In early surrender, the players surrender and get half of their bet before the dealer checks for Blackjack while in late surrender the players surrenders and get half of his bet after the dealers have checked for Blackjack. The former reduces the house edge by 0.624 and the latter reduces the house edge by 0.07.
