How do handicap bets work?
First, it is important to have a basic understanding of the handicap bet. Therefore, we want to explain the principle to you using the simplest and most common form. This is used for classic 3-way bets, which are particularly widespread in football. In general, you have the following 3 options to choose from:
- 1 = home win
- X = tie
- 2 = away win
With handicap bets, however, you do not bet on the actual result of the game. Instead, you assign a team (or player) an artificial advantage or disadvantage in the form of goals (or points in other sports). The decisive factor for winning a handicap bet is the official result of the match, taking into account the handicap you previously set.
For example, you can set a handicap of +1 for a team in football. This means that they already start the game with a fictitious goal advantage. If you bet on the victory of this team and the game ends 0-0, you have won the bet anyway. Conversely, a handicap of -1 is also possible. The team in question already has an artificial deficit of one goal before kick-off. If you bet on a win here, the team with the handicap must win by at least two goals for you to win the bet.

Handicap betting strategy: benefit from attractive odds
Now that you have understood the basic principle of handicap bets, the question naturally arises as to what sense it makes to place tips on this betting market. Basically it’s pretty easy to explain. Especially when betting on favorites, you can benefit from higher odds. For example, if there’s a game between two opponents with different terms of performance in a soccer game, you will only receive a relatively low betting rate if you tip the favorite.
With a handicap bet you can increase the odds considerably by giving your favorite an artificial goal deficit (handicap -1). If the difference in performance is particularly pronounced, it is advisable to set this deficit even higher (handicap -2 or even handicap -3). The following applies: the higher the handicap, the higher the betting odds.
This principle also works the other way round when betting on outsiders. You equip the significantly weaker opponent with a corresponding goal lead (handicap +1). Here, too, you can increase the lead depending on the assessment of the balance of power (handicap +2 or higher). Thus, ideally, you regulate the betting odds to a level that is both lucrative and low-risk.

Bet on a draw in handicap bet
In addition to tips on a home win or an away win, you can also bet on a draw (X) with handicap bets. In this case, however, you do not bet on the actual outcome of the game a draw, but here to the respective handicap will be offset against the official outcome of the game.
The following example should clarify this variant: You bet on Bayern Leverkusen’s home game against VfL Wolfsburg. You place a bet on a tie, giving the outsider Wolfsburg a lead of one goal. This would be shown to you in the betting slip as follows: Tip: X (VfL Wolfsburg +1).
You will only win this bet if the game ends with one goal ahead for Leverkusen and the actual game result, adjusted for the handicap, is balanced. It doesn’t matter whether Wolfsburg wins 1: 0, 2: 1, 3: 2 or 4: 3. The goal difference is decisive for all of them. Handicap bets on a tie make it possible to achieve relatively high odds with a relatively small risk.
