How to play 5 Card Draw Poker?

There are two main ways to play 5-Card Draw: ante and blinds. In the anteversion, each player pays a predetermined ante before being dealt any cards.

The game functions as a blinds game in the second system, which means that the player to the dealer’s immediate left pays the small blind, while the big blind is paid by the player to the left of the small blind.

Each hand starts with a specific player being designated as the dealer, indicated by a dealer button. The dealer button and blinds move one position to the left at the completion of each hand.

The game starts with the two blinds making a forced bet, which size depends on the table limits. Now the dealer passes out cards. Each player receives five cards face down, one at a time in a clockwise order starting with the player in the small blind position.

The players of the 5-Card Draw Poker can only see their own cards. They have the option to improve their hand by replacing cards. There are two rounds of betting and a showdown.

Step by Step guide to Play 5 Card Draw Poker

The first round of betting starts when every player has five cards. The first player to act is the one on the left of the big blind. There are three options in 5-Card Draw Poker:

  • Fold
  • Call
  • Raise

It is almost always wrong to call in the first betting round, only to throw away four or all five of your cards. Play carries on with the next player to the left. The betting round ends once all players have either called the previous high, raised or folded.

So, here is a learning scenario. Four players will be playing. There are unique house rules and pot limits in every game. In this game the antes are $1 and betting will be limited at $2-$10, with a maximum of 3 raises. Player A is the dealer.

All players put $1 in the pot as an ante bet. The pot total: is $4.

Player A/Dealer deals one card at a time, face down, starting on the dealer’s left, moving clockwise, until all players have 5 cards. Player B, the player to the dealer’s left, bets first. Her options are: check or bet.

If the decision is to bet, players C, D and A must match (or raise) that bet, or fold their cards. So, if Player B checks, all players stay in the hand to “draw” for better cards later:

Player B: checks

C: bets $2

D: calls (matches) $2 bet from C

A: calls $2 bet from C

B: calls $2 bet from C

Pot total: now $12

When the last player acts, the betting round is finished

Player A/Dealer moves around the table clockwise, starting with the player on the left (B), asking players how many new cards they would like to “draw” (exchange).

A common house rule is that a player with an Ace can receive 4 new cards if they keep the Ace. If a player chooses not to discard any cards, then she has a “pat hand”.

Player B starts the new round of betting once all players have had a chance to draw new cards and analyze their hands. Once more, the options are: check or bet. If the decision is to check, Player C has the option to check as well. Should Player B bet, Player C can call, raise, or fold. Let’s say Player C raises, then Player D can call, re-raise or fold.

Player B: bets $2

C: folds

D: calls $2, raises $2

A: calls $4

B: calls $2 raise

Pot total: now $24

All hands are revealed face-up on the table. The highest-ranked hand wins and takes the $24 pot. There is a showdown if more than one player remains after the second round of betting.

The pot is won by the player with the best five-card poker hand. Should a player raise and get no callers, she wins the pot by default.

Reading your opponents

In 5-Card Draw, you don’t see any community or opponent’s cards at all. You need to get all your information from betting patterns and how many cards the player discards on the draw.

Observe how often each player voluntarily enters the pot and note their betting patterns and the number of cards they discard in the draw. If they discard two or more cards, then they probably have a weak hand.

They might be drawing to a flush or straight, or they have a made hand and are looking to make it even stronger. If they stand pat, then they either have a strong hand or they’re trying to bluff.

To make it difficult for your opponents to “read” you, try to act in a neutral manner. Keep your voice the same, sit and move the same way and do not change how you act, based on the hand or situation.

Also consider your position. Late position always helps because you get to act last. Your starting hand needs to be stronger if you are in early position, but in late position, your range can be wider.

Here are a few tips to follow as you proceed down your own path in 5-Card Draw:

  • Don’t play too many hands.
  • Position is king.
  • Come into pots with a raise rather than a limp.
  • Avoid playing drawing hands, unless you are in the blinds.

Remember the golden rule of all gambling: quit while you are winning and have fun!
